Nielsenwire. (2010, August 2). What Americans Do Online: Social Media and Games Dominate Activity. Retrieved from http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/what-americans-do-online-social-media-and-games-dominate-activity/.

According to the Nielsen Company's research, about 36 percent of Americans spent their time communicating and networking across social networks, blogs, personal email and instant messaging.
The topic of this blog is to present the research results on what Americans do online, and the purpose of this study is to show Americans that social networking and gaming online were the top two activities that people in the United States engaged in.This research points out that Americans spends a third of their online time, which is about 36 percent, communicating and networking across social networks, blogs, personal email and instant messaging. Even though gaming online beats emailing among Americans' time on the internet, emailing is still highly used. The Nielsen Company collected these information through online categories visited from PC/laptops. I think that the usefulness of this information is that it shows how much social media plays a role in the lives of Americans nowadays.

The Internet can be Dangerous

Kleinfeld, Judith. (2008, May 23). Internet can be a Dangerous Weapon. Anchorage Daily News.

Link to article.

This article pretty much covered the subject of the danger of the internet. It's effects on people, their workplace, employers, and especially cyberbullying. The author's purpose of this article is to warn us that cyber bullying can happen to anyone, not just teenagers but adults too, so we just all have to be careful what we post online. In the article, Kleinfeld points out that girls are more likely to be victims of cyber bullying, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Also, more than one in 10 teenagers said someone has spread a rumor about them online. Kleinfeld talks about cyber bullying being dangerous by using a real life situation where a girl named Megan hung herself because she was cyber bullied. Because cyber bullying is so serious, it should be stopped. This is something important that we should all pay attention to because we will know what to do if we ever are in these kinds of situations. Social Media is a great place for communication, but sometimes, people tend to use it to harm others.

How to Prevent Cyber Bullying!

Reading Manga Online!

Manga books are Japanese graphic novels that has become widely popular in the United States. Teenagers are more likely to read Manga books because a lot of Manga books illustrates/ portrays high-school based settings. Thanks to Social Media, people have created websites where they translate the original Japanese Manga pages and then post them up on those websites. Now, more people are buying less manga books from bookstores because they can easily access any manga title and read online it. Social Media has made Manga fans more happy than ever.

Youtube

Thanks to YouTube, people from all over the world can watch all kinds of videos. They can even post their own videos too. We can search and listen to any music from all kinds of genres. I go to YouTube a lot, and I'm sure a lot of other people do too. Whenever I hear a good song on the radio and just from somewhere random, I would go and look it up on YouTube or Google. I am really glad that YouTube exist because it is such an awesome website. I don't know what the world would be like if YouTube didn't exist. It's like the main website where people go and entertain themselves sometimes when they are bored and just click on random videos to watch. Not only that, but it has also News Report, which we can watch to stay updated on what's going on in the world.

"(Name Here) Is a Liar and a Cheat" by: Lizette Alvarez

Alvarez, Lizette. (2006, February 16). (Name Here) Is a Liar and a Cheat. The New York Times, pg. 31-32.

In my Psychology Class, my Professor gave us this article as an assignment, and I thought this would be a good post for my blog for this assignment in this class. To start off, this article is about women creating websites and posting about men who have lied and cheated behind their backs. By doing this, these women want to warn other women to not date those particular guys who are just liars. I believe the author's purpose of this article is just to let us readers know and beware of what's going on in the real world that is now can be found online! If a woman does not trust the man she is with or does not know enough about him, and he is not telling her, then what better way to know than to look him up online! However, Alvarez points out that these websites has been sometimes helpful and amusing, but it has also enraged men who were either guilty or not. These men has sent email messages or made phone calls to have their names and photographs taken down. They say that these websites are biased and damaging if the story was not true. Alvarez obtains her information from the website creators themselves by interviews. The usefulness of this article is that it helps women has a voice through the social media. Back then, women couldn't do anything if a men lied or cheated on her. Now that there is social media and the internet, women can expose these horrible men and prevent such problems from happening again.

Facebook Lead to Happiness

Junghyun, K., & Jong-Eun Roselyn, L. (2011). The Facebook Paths to Happiness: Effects of the Number of Facebook Friends and Self-Presentation on Subjective Well-Being. Cyberpsychology, Behavior & Social Networking, 14(6), 359-364. doi:10.1089/cyber.2010.0374

I retrieved this article from the UAA/ APU database, and this article talks about how Facebook can make people happy. In 2004, Facebook became one of the world's leading social networking sites. A study showed that college-age students spends about 28 minutes per day on Facebook. In the article, it says that friends are an important source of emotional and practical support and therefore it is considered a key element of happiness. However though, the friends someone has on their Facebook does not require strong attachment or close attachments therefore the number of Facebook has positive effects on one's subjective well-being. The purpose of this article is to show the goodness of Facebook, and the impacts it has on people. The author of this article, Kim and Lee, obtained these information from a lot of online resources: one of those resources includes Mark Zucberburg's (the creator of Facebook) online blog. The useful of this article is very important to Social Media because Facebook has become widely used to stay connected with family members, friends from far away, and people in the same community. People log onto their Facebook accounts more than once each day to stay connected and updates as much as possible.

Response to Kathryn's Blog

On Kathryn's blog, she made a post called "Teen Killer: Social Media Led to Murder" and on this post, she mentioned that a teenage girl committed a murder because the teenage girl was fighting over this one guy with another girl, and the teenager girl ended up killing the other girl. This all happened through texting. I like how Kathryn says that: "I agree that this is a very useful article to share with not only teens but adults too. Once something is in writing you can't take it back, and it could very easily get blown out of proportion. You can't really hide behind a text or the internet because you definitely are not safe."
I agree with her on that part a lot. Once you write something, it is hard to take it back because it is already there. In this case, if you really mean what you say, then I guess it would be okay to post it, but if it's something that is not what you really meant, than I would suggest not to say anything about it and not post it up.
