Summary of "Games" by Steven Johnson

 

     Video games have become widely popular all over the world, and people of all ages plays video games. Because video games have become such a big influence in our modern culture, Steven Johnson worries about it and wants to promote more reading instead of video games. Johnson says that we should all encourage kids to read more, so children can develop a comfort with and an appetite for reading.  Johnson mentioned Andrew Solomon's analysis of people who read: they are more likely to visit museums, attend musical performances, volunteer, do charity work, and attend sporting events than people who don't read. He also mentioned that readers are more active than nonreaders who have settled into apathy. 

    People who plays video games are a lot like the people who uses the internet a lot or is always constantly using social media. We can conclude that people who uses social media are likely to stay indoors and interact less with the outside world. Those kind of people will also have had settled into apathy, which sometimes isn't always a good thing because they have isolated themselves from society. Social media has influenced people nowadays so much that they don't even know what is going on in their community anymore unless these events are posted on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Sometimes though, that is a good thing because information can be passed around and people will see it.
